Dream Motorsport’s Thomas Randle took the top honours with a last gasp effort in the closing stages of the session. With only minutes to spare Randle and Lloyd were trading pole position lap-on-lap, but it was Randle who eventually secured the number one grid spot by a mere 0.2214sec.
“It was good to get in some laps but a lot of them were not very clear, I was really just trying to push the car to it’s limit,” Randle said.
“Through the back chicane I was pretty much getting it sideways nearly every time.”
Even with the amazing result Randle was confident he had more to give.
“My car was really good in the first chicane and on that lap I guess I found the most amount of grip.”
Team BRM’s Jordan Lloyd continued his top level performance however had to be content with qualifying second with a time of 1:17.6987.
“On the last flying lap I made a bit of a mistake and I was unlucky enough to get the checkered flag first,” Lloyd said.
“We will have pace in tomorrow’s race which I think is most important.”
Echoing Randle’s response Lloyd also stated his intention to improve on the challenging street circuit.
“If you ever get to the point where your car is perfect to drive you are not pushing hard enough.”
Despite Lloyd qualifying on the front row, he will cop a two-place penalty carried over from the last round at Sandown. Fifteen-year-old Luis Leeds qualified third after spending the two previous practice sessions finding his feet with a series of improving practice times.
“It’s my first time here at the Gold Coast, so I spent the first two Practice sessions learning,” Leeds said.
“Unfortunately I only did one or two hot laps in the first session so it made the second session quite tough
“In qualifying I did my best and got P3 which is pretty good,” Leeds continued.
Leeds will also receive a grid place penalty held over from Sandown, while Tom Grech bounced back from a heavy crash crash in Practice 2 finishing fourth - the AGI Sport team lending Grech the Jayco Dealer Team car after his own was too damaged to repair in time for qualifying.
“Considering I really didn’t know the car I went really well in that session placing second on the grid after penalties,” Grech said.
Grech was quick to thank his team for their amazing effort in getting him back on track for the session.
“Thanks to AGI for turning it around so quickly and to Jayco Dealer Team for the loan of the car.”
